Richard Crouse: $75M Movie or $200M Theatre Reno? Both.

When a Documentary Isn’t Really a Documentary
Documentary brand management turns journalism into promotional reels with production budgets. You’re deciding whether to watch Melania in theaters. You see it labeled as a documentary about Melania Trump. You expect examination, investigation, depth. What you get is what Crouse calls a really well-curated Instagram reel. The film never gets underneath the surface. It’s an exercise in brand management with no real intellectual curiosity.

The economics reveal the actual purpose. $40 million production cost. Another $35 million for marketing. Total investment around $75 million for probably the most expensive documentary ever made. Box office return? $7 million.

Performing arts venues define cities. They make places feel alive and worth visiting. New York has Broadway. Paris has the Grand Opera House. The Kennedy Center already overwhelms visitors with beauty. Whether it needs $200 million in renovation or just needs renovation in Trump’s preferred aesthetic remains the question.

Booze & Reviews: The Mockumentary About Burning Out Before You Peak
Musical mockumentary filmmaking captures artists at career crossroads facing impossible timing. You’re Charlie XCX. Your sixth album Brat just went stratospheric. The message resonated: it’s okay to be messy, hedonistic, unapologetic. Brat Summer became a massive pop culture phenomenon. Now you’re planning your first arena tour headlining. But you’re terrified. Pop culture burns white hot for very little while, then disappears. You could become a cliche before you even capitalize on the moment that made you famous.

The themed cocktails match the chaos. Appletini with apple vodka, Calvados, cloudy apple juice, and lime. Brat Sour mixing Midori melon liqueur, vodka, coconut water, and fresh lime topped with soda. Porn Star Martini combining vanilla vodka, passion fruit liqueur and puree, lime juice, vanilla syrup, topped with Prosecco. All bright green matching the brat summer color. All chaotic party energy.
