Hollywood leading men are disappearing and Ed Conroy has a specific way of putting it: when Clooney and DiCaprio and Pitt are gone, where is the new Paul Newman? Brad Pitt was voted Sexiest Man Alive in 1995. Ed Conroy’s point is that he could probably win it again right now, and that is not a compliment to anyone younger.
What does it feel like to look around a culture you grew up inside and realize the thing you loved most about it is not being replaced? The actors coming up now are Marvel guys or Netflix series guys. They pay the bills. They do not have the range to do the popcorn film and the Oscar film and the chemistry-driven ensemble that made those names into something beyond recognition. SNL in 1995 was the closest the show ever came to cancellation. Mad TV launched the same year. Mike Myers walked out the door. And somehow that season is still the one everyone calls the golden era.
Chemistry cannot be manufactured. AI cannot create it. The people who had it learned it from the generation before them, and Ed Conroy is not sure who is learning it now.
