ICYMI – Fourteen Years Ago Gord Downey Was Way Ahead

Tragically Hip music has a way of arriving late for some people. Not because the songs changed but because the listener did. Ryan O’Donnell grew up hearing his dad scream the lyrics at house parties and filed it under parents’ music until 2020, when he downloaded a couple of songs and went, oh wait. That is a specific kind of conversion.

Gord Downey on CBC talked about being in your body, knowing when you are actually present and when you are just going through it. That clip is fourteen years old. The idea is everywhere right now and the wellness industry is still trying to articulate it with less precision.

The band stayed together after Gord Downey died. Independent music continues. The loyalty that surrounded the Tragically Hip, the managers, the crew, the fans, did not dissolve with the band. That kind of thing does not happen by accident.
