Nietzsche, the Ubermensch, and Why Bad People Aren’t Nihilists

Nihilism says nothing is special. Greg Fish says that is the most freeing idea in philosophy, and the most misunderstood.

Greg Fish argues that the real source of depression and anxiety is not nihilism but the opposite: the belief that you have a special purpose and the crushing weight of never finding it. If there is no place in the universe designated for you, you are free to find the things you are good at, the things that make you happy, the things that make the people around you happy.

Nietzsche’s Ubermensch, stripped of bad translations, is Greg Fish’s self-actualized person: the one who found meaning in the nothing. Morality under nihilism comes from empathy. The people scamming crypto and spreading disinformation online are not acting on the philosophy. They are bad people who found an excuse.
