ICYMI – The Home Footage That Changed How Ed Conroy Sees 9/11

Twenty five years after September 11th, the raw footage tells a different story than the highlight reels do. Ed Conroy spent the last day and a half digitizing VHS tapes people recorded live that morning, giving you a first look at how the coverage actually unfolded, not what got repeated for twenty five years.

Air travel used to look nothing like it does now. Conroy walks through what flying was actually like before the towers fell, from what passengers could carry onto a plane to who was allowed into the cockpit, and how fast all of it disappeared.

The footage is also ageing in ways nobody expected. Conroy talks about watching broadcasters realize live, on camera, what they were witnessing, and why he thinks a certain kind of movie about that day may never get made.

Topics: September 11th, 9/11 anniversary, air travel security, VHS footage, 2001
