Car Buying Scams: The Smoke Was Real. The Damage Wasn’t

Used car scams don’t always start online. Two strangers showed up at a man’s driveway, sprayed oil on his engine while he wasn’t watching, and walked away with the vehicle for $800. He thought his engine had blown. It hadn’t.

What does it feel like to watch smoke pour from your tailpipe and have no way to know if it’s real? He handed over the ownership, the tires, and the goodwill. They gave him an envelope. When he counted it after they left, there was $200 less than they had agreed on.

The red flags were there before they ever opened the hood. Most of them have nothing to do with cars.
