ICYMI – If You Have to Explain It in Primetime, It Is Not Going Your Way

Trump Iran war speech ran tonight and Matt Gurney’s first observation was this: when a president goes on national television in primetime to reassure his own base that gas prices will come down and this is not going to be another Iraq, that is not a sign that things are going the way they had hoped.

What does it mean that Iran is doing exactly what every credible military analyst said they would do and Trump keeps going on television to say he is surprised by it? Matt Gurney says the US and Israel are operating with very different levels of strategic clarity. The Israelis have a target list and a goal. The Americans are compensating for strategic incoherence with firepower. The 82nd Airborne and a Marine Amphibious Assault Group are in the region. Ground troops were not mentioned in the speech. That absence was notable.

Trump counted down his war against Iraq and World War II to make a month in Iran sound short. He said the new Iranian leadership is less radical. He said the hard part is done. Matt Gurney says we got a few steps closer tonight to Trump declaring victory and going home. Whether that constitutes victory is a different question.
