ICYMI – SORA: I Told You So, Love Greg Fish

OpenAI Sora shut down after a couple of months, Disney pulled a billion-dollar deal, and Greg Fish has been saying for almost a year that this was coming. Not because AI is useless, but because the gap between what Sora was claiming to be and what it actually was had nowhere else to go.

There is a specific thing that happens when probabilistic technology tries to be deterministic through sheer repetition. It reverts to the mean. The output looks like something is slightly wrong even when nothing obvious is broken, and people pick up on it immediately without being able to say why. Greg Fish can say why, and he has been saying it while the rest of the industry was calling Sora the TikTok killer, the YouTube killer, the Reels killer.

AI is genuinely good at rotoscoping cleanup, pre-visualization, audio work, and debugging database queries in an afternoon instead of two days. The companies know this. The problem is that none of those things justify a $730 billion IPO valuation, so the pitch keeps reaching for everything.
