Tragically Hip Saturday Night Live 1995 started with Gord Downie walking out and saying the wrong first lyric. Instead of fabulously rich he said tragically hip because he could hear Dan Aykroyd introducing them in his head. The band had smoked weed before going on. Jake Gold was watching from the wings. Nobody planned it and it stuck forever.
What does it feel like to look back on a single year and realize it contained Maple Leaf Gardens in February, the Rolling Stones in Europe that summer, Page Plant for 30 shows in America, and two nights at Madison Square Garden to close it out? Jake Gold managed all of it. He also brought his mom to the after party because it was her birthday. She walked up to John Goodman, grabbed his face with both hands, looked up at him and told him she loved him in the Flintstones.
Gord’s two-finger gesture during that opening lyric had nothing to do with the nerves. His nephew was turning 11. He promised to say happy birthday on TV. That is the version of the story most people have never heard.
