Shiftheads – Provincial Rights Sound Good. Until Another Province Uses Them Against You

An Alberta referendum ballot can reject separation and still endorse significant demands of Ottawa. Rob Breakenridge gives you a closer look at those separate decisions, including proposals that deserve more scrutiny than the headline question leaves room for.

Rob hears reluctance to raise the subject socially, but quiet conversations don’t guarantee a predictable turnout. Meanwhile, immigration questions combine demands for more provincial influence with restrictions on services. Those are different choices, and he sees reasons they may not receive the same reception.

Wanting flexibility with federal money is one argument. Wanting the money without the programme is another. Rob tests both, then recalls a dispute where Alberta backed Ottawa against a province asserting its own authority. Would the principle still work when the provincial veto belongs to somebody else?

Topics: Alberta referendum, provincial rights, immigration policy, federal funding, voter turnout
