AI human agency is the thing the pitch keeps asking you to hand over. You get the new tool. You get the update you did not ask for. You get the message at work that says you better learn this or get left behind. The marketing does not say here is something that will extend what you can do. It says why are you even trying? Just let it handle it.
What does it feel like when the disrespect is so baked into the product that you cannot separate one from the other? Only 26% of Americans have a favourable view of AI right now, and Greg Fish points out that 15 to 20% of people will agree with anything on a survey. So the number is worse than it looks. Meanwhile AI is being used to write code, then used to review that code, and the bugs that could not have survived a human check are shipping anyway. Missing icons. Broken search. Basic things.
The reaction has been visceral because the ask is visceral. Technology felt different when it wanted to help. This version wants your credit card number, your data, and your agreement that you are the least important part of the transaction.
